The Sport and Recreation Pillar focuses on fostering community wellbeing through participation and improving the capacity of sport and recreation assets (human, physical and natural) to respond to the regional community's needs.
Sport and Recreation is a feature of life in the Region. Sport and Recreation contributes to community wellbeing, provides an enormous range of opportunities for community engagement and participation and makes a significant economic contribution through tourism and employment.
The region has a diverse range of sporting facilities, organisations, clubs and competitions including football, basketball, horse racing, cricket, golf, track and field athletics, soccer, swimming, netball, hockey, lawn bowls, tennis, baseball and motor sports to mention a few.
Sport has a profile beyond the region through the Geelong Football Club and a range of international events such as the Women's World Cycling Cup and the International Triathlon Union Triathlon World Cup.
Diverse recreation opportunities abound at coastal and inland water ways which are within easy travel distance for local residents, metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria visitors. Walking and bike riding trails are available in an array of natural environments.
In addition to the many recreational facilities, the region is also known for its nationally significant parks and the acclaimed Geelong Botanic Gardens. The region's arts and cultural facilities also provide a range of recreational and leisure opportunities.
