The Transport Pillar focuses on:
- growing the region's reputation, capability and capacity as the leading transport hub for south-eastern Australia;
- improving community and visitor access to services, educational and vocational opportunities and lifestyle activities;
- improving the amenity and safety of transport infrastructure and reducing the environmental impact of transport activity.
The region is readily accessible from:
- Melbourne by the six-lane Princes Freeway;
- Melbourne International Airport (Tullamarine) via the Westgate Freeway and the Western Ring Road;
- Melbourne's eastern suburbs and Eastern Victoria via the Princes Freeway and Melbourne's City Link network;
- Victorian regional centers via the Hamilton and Midland Highways, and a connection with the Mornington Peninsula via modern car ferries operating from the Bellarine Peninsula.
The region also has a comprehensive road network that links major towns including Colac, Apollo Bay, Lorne, Torquay, Bannockburn and Queenscliff and provides ready access to popular destinations.
Public transport services include rail, bus and taxis.
Geelong is a major Victorian freight centre. The broad-gauge rail network accesses the bulk storage facilities, the Port of Geelong and also connects the region to Melbourne and Adelaide.
Rail passenger services exist between Geelong, Melbourne, Adelaide and Warrnambool. The service between Geelong and Melbourne is to be upgraded as part of the State Government's Fast Rail initiative.
The Port of Geelong is one of the busiest ports in Australia. It specialises in bulk cargoes and provides a comprehensive facility that gives processors the opportunity to add value to imports and exports.
Avalon Airport is an important aviation precinct, that can accommodate the largest international jet aircraft, has no curfew and air-traffic is light.
