
Located in southern Victoria, in southeastern Australia, the Geelong Region has direct access to the nation's major markets of Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, and the markets of the Pacific basin and South-east Asia and is one of Australia's most diversified economic centres. The Region is a significant centre of manufacturing, particularly for automotive components, metals, chemicals, textiles and food processing. The Region possesses a wide range of industrial and commercial skills to complement its range of industry and commerce capabilities.
In 1998, the Geelong Region was ranked by the National Institute of Economic and Industrial Research at number three in Australia for the supply of research and development. It is a leading centre in industrial research, health technology, biotechnology and agricultural research.
The Region has a high state of business readiness, with a comprehensive network of infrastructure including an excellent intra-regional roads system, which links directly to the other major Victorian regional centres, and Melbourne via the six-lane Princes Highway. Rail connections to Melbourne and Adelaide are made via the National Standard Gauge railway line, with connections to Melbourne and the Western District via the Victorian broad gauge system. All of these road and rail systems are connected to the Geelong Port, the largest bulk shipping facility in Victoria. Geelong's Avalon Airport is Melbourne's second major passenger airport as well as a centre for aerospace, jet pilot training and airfreight. The 3,048 metres runway and can accommodate the largest international aircraft.
Noted for its excellence in education and training, the Region has Deakin University, the Gordon Institute of TAFE, Marcus Oldham Farm Management College, world-renowned private schools, a wide range of primary and secondary public schools as well as a recently announced Australian Technical College for the Geelong Region.
