Key Economic Indicators released

The City of Greater Geelong has released the December 2009 Key Economic Indicators Report which monitors the region's economy by reviewing the monthly unemployment rate, weekly job vacancies, quarterly median house prices, monthly domestic building activity and monthly non-domestic building activity. The monthly report complements the annual Economic Indicators Bulletin. The key points are:

  • The unemployment rate for the Barwon Western District in November 2009 was 4.9% (a decrease of 0.7 percentage points compared to the previous month).
  • During November 2009 an average of 201 regional job vacancies were advertised each week in the Geelong Advertiser (an increase of 5.8% on the previous month).
  • A total of 248 domestic new building permits were issued in the City of Greater Geelong in October 2009 (a decrease of 11.1% on the previous month).
  • A total of 55 non-domestic building permits were issued in the City of Greater Geelong in October 2009 (a decrease 27.6% on the previous month).
  • The median house price in the City of Greater Geelong increased to $329,000 in the September 2009 quarter (an increase of 0.2% on the previous revised quarter).
