G21 region cricket hero Aaron Finch will be among stars on show as Melbourne Renegades take on the Sydney Sixers in Geelong in a first regional Victorian Big Bash double-header.

Men’s and women’s teams will let fly in the January 3 T20 blockbuster at Simonds Stadium, providing spectactular viewing highlights for local fans and the region’s many summer holidaymakers.

International superstars including Dwayne Bravo, Ashleigh Gardner, Nathan Lyon and Cameron White will also be part of the big show, which will be broadcast to 147 countries and enhance Kardinia Park’s  status as Australia’s regional home of cricket.

Sport Minister and Member for Lara John Eren was joined by Renegades Tim Ludeman and Sophie Molineux as he announced the coup.

The Renegades will also host a week-long training camp and community activities around Geelong leading into the clash and fans will be able to meet players at a family day at Kardinia Park on December 10.

Australian, Sri Lankan, West Indian and Melbourne Stars teams have previously shaped up at Kardinia and the State Government is working with Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria to bring more world-class matches to regional communities.

Sport Minister and Member for Lara John Eren said events like the Big Bash gave locals a chance to see their heroes live in their own back yards, and visitors a chance to see what the region has to offer.

“We’re turning Kardinia Park into the best regional stadium in Australia so we can host blockbusters like this,” Mr Eren said.

“Bringing Big Bash to Geelong will inspire our kids, attract visitors and create an incredible buzz around town.”

Allocations from the Regional Events Fund and Significant Sporting Events Program helped secure the fixture.
