Have you seen the GROW Community Snapshots?

Health and Wellbeing Pillar

Snapshots of census data has been compiled for GROW target communities: Corio, Norlane, Whittington and Colac.

The Snapshots look at the general demographics of each community, and also at labour force participation, education, income and housing.

Did you know that in some areas 27% of households don’t have access to the internet? Or that youth unemployment rates can be as high as 75%? Or that rental stress is significantly higher in some suburbs in our region?

The data highlights the importance of creating sustainable employment opportunities in targeted disadvantaged areas.

GROW is committed to collectively achieving this, and recently celebrated GeelongPort as its 100th local business to sign the GROW Compact.

The GROW initiative supports partners in developing new business practices or changing existing ones to benefit community members living in local targeted areas of disadvantage.

Actions taken by GROW compact signatories create significant change. Examples of this include:

  • The City of Greater Geelong, who has integrated the GROW principles into their Procurement Policy for all new contracts.
  • Barwon Water, who has expanded their traineeship program from one trainee in 2015 to thirteen in 2018.
  • Air Radiators, who are working with Northern Futures to develop a paid work experience model which has led to ongoing employment for three young people.
