Sports and Recreation Pillar

The G21 Sport and Recreation Pillar held a ‘Planning Workshop’ on 3 December 2018.

The workshop was well attended by Pillar members with 14 participants and generously facilitated by Libby Mears, Chief Executive Officer, Leisure Networks.

The role and objectives of the Sport and Recreation Pillar was discussed and summarised as follows:

  • Regional Sport Planning
  • Infrastructure development and planning
  • Collective advocacy & support
  • Information sharing & collective expertise
  • Enhanced partnerships, enabling projects to move forward.

‘Advocacy’ was identified as a key role of the pillar, with future Pillar Priority Projects fitting into themes as follows:

  • Regional Planning
  • Infrastructure
  • Sport & Active Recreation Development
  • Emerging Opportunities - Longer Term
  • Current Challenges (influenced by demographic trends)

A range of projects were identified under each theme and then shortlisted by consensus which identified five projects for further scoping before determining the pillars priority projects:

Theme Project
Regional Planning Inclusive Play Strategy (Accessibility - Women, Children, Disability)
Infrastructure Waurn Ponds Sports Precinct
Regional Planning State of Play Review (Regional Sports Strategies)
Regional Planning Basketball/Indoor Facilities Strategy
Emerging Opportunities Data (evidence based planning)
