Works begin on Civic Precinct

Work has commenced on the City of Greater Geelong’s new Civic Precinct, with pre-construction demolition works beginning on Bayley Street. Construction of the precinct is scheduled to commence at the end of July.

The development will create around 900 jobs, and with a commitment to purchase locally where possible, will have a significant impact on the region’s economy and social outcomes.

The City and project partners Quintessential Equity (QE) have appointed leading builder Watpac to deliver the new Civic Precinct.

QE and Watpac have set a target of 60 per cent local procurement through the construction of the precinct. This will provide a much-needed boost to local industry, creating around 900 jobs for local businesses and suppliers in the region.

The new Civic Precinct is key infrastructure that contributes to the revitalisation of Central Geelong, a G21 Priority Project.

It will unite staff from seven offices into one new purpose-built energy efficient building, that will drive collaboration, reduce costs and future-proof the City’s workplace needs. Once complete, the new offices will save the City $3 million per year in rent and energy costs alone.

The precinct will also feature co-working areas, end-of-trip facilities, café and retail, making it a precinct the whole community will be able to enjoy. Its design includes a new laneway connection from Mercer Street to Bayley Street.

An additional commercial building at the precinct, developed by QE, will afford commercial opportunities to lease office space in another of QE’s sustainably designed buildings in central Geelong with capacity to support a further 900 CBD employees.

Importantly, the City, QE and Watpac are signatories of G21 Region Opportunities for Work (GROW), and delivery of the project will focus on maximising economic and social outcomes in Geelong by creating new jobs and opportunities for people experiencing disadvantage.

The project site at 137 Mercer Street, which is currently utilised as a paid car park, will be handed over to project builders on 20 July ahead of construction commencing. The City is exploring making available additional parking on Gheringhap Street.

The City’s new office will achieve the highest environmental standards in design, energy, waste and water usage including a six-star Green Star design rating as part of the city’s ambitions to position Geelong as a leader in innovative and sustainable business, in line with their community-led Clever and Creative 30-year vision for the region.
